Top 5 tips for succeeding in massage therapy school
So, you’ve decided to enroll in massage therapy school.
Congratulations! You are taking your first step toward a new career in a
fast-growing field. But don’t make the mistake of thinking it will be easy—it
will be challenging, but your hard work and dedication will pay off. Here are
five tips that will help you achieve success as you embark on your new
adventure.
Set aside
regular time to study
You have a lot to learn, both in the classroom and in your practice
sessions. As you dive into anatomy and physiology, pathology, and kinesiology,
you will quickly discover that the human body is very complex. You will learn
best if you set aside some time to study—every day if possible—rather than
trying to cram it all in right before the exam.
Form a
study group
For most people, peer learning is the single most effective way to
learn. It is also a great way to stay motivated in your courses and to keep on
your study schedule. Connect with others in your program and form a study
group. You can help one another master difficult concepts, quiz each other on
medical terminology, and even trade massages.
Practice
as much as possible
The most important part of your training will come from practice, so do
it as much as possible. As you practice, focus on your body mechanics, which
refers to how you move your own body during massage. As you will learn in your
courses, correct body mechanics is essential for helping massage therapists
avoid injuries, such as those caused by repetitive movements.
Engage in
self care
Going to school is always a challenge, especially if you have been out
of school for a while. In addition to the mental challenge of learning and
staying focused, massage therapy school is physically challenging as well.
Practicing self care, including eating healthy foods, exercising, getting
enough sleep, and taking a break when you need to, can help you hold up to all
of the challenges you will face over the next several months and years.
Fortunately, as a massage student, you will also be on the receiving end of
numerous massages, which can help you deal with stress.
Keep
focused on your goals
Having goals and staying focused on them will help pave your way to
success. Practice setting both short-term goals, like acing your Swedish
massage class, and long-term goals, like passing your certification exam. Write
down your goals and post them somewhere you can see them. Review and revise
them on a regular basis, for example, once a month or at the beginning of each
term. And, of course, plan special treats for when you reach them.
